<p> DIED. WILLIAM GOLDING, 81, author; of a heart attack; in Perranarworthal,
England. Golding's first published novel, Lord of the Flies,
won critical acclaim for its disturbing depiction of the descent
of marooned schoolboys into barbarism. Golding, who published
nine other novels, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983
and was knighted five years ago.
